Music in the Movies

After looking at the Blues Brothers yesterday it reminded me how important music can be to a movie, and how it can make a good movie great, but also sometimes be one of the most memorable things from a movie.

Some types of music are used consistently in some genres, the main one that spring to mind is elctro synth rock and the Italian Giallo movies, Dario Argento and Goblin in particular. Watch the video below and you'll see how beautifully Argento and Goblin put together a trailer for the fantastic Suspira (1977), it's a work of art.

So on the other side of the horror/suspense coin we have an opening number that sets the tone in a different fashion, the marvelously entertaining Anna and the Apocalypse (2017).

You can't discuss music in the movies without mentioning the legendary John Williams, he has 410 soundtrack credits on IMDb and 160 as composer, the man has scored just about everything, and we all know his work. He has had 52 Oscar nominations, which is a record, he has won 5, as well as numerous Emmy, Golden Globes, Gammys and BAFTAs nominations and wins. Check out some off his greatest hits below, how many did you know?

I suppose the man that is trying to take John Williams crown would be Hans Zimmer, and what a fantastic job he is doing, check out how he's doing so far.

Of course there's always the song or soundtrack that make you hate a movie even more, I present (watch at your peril!) Celine Dion!

From the ridiculous to the sublime, Queen and the theme from Flash Gordon, enjoy, difficult not to!

I could have done a blog a mile long on this subject, and I might just do another later on but I'm going to finish with one of my favorites, Purple Rain by the much missed Prince.
