Video Nasties: The Seduction of the Gullible Pt 3.2

Blood Feast (1963) was passed uncut for cinema upon release, the problem came when it was submitted for video release, details are sketchy as to why this title was prosecuted, several different reasons have been put forward, I think it may have suffered from being released without going through the BBFC first, a bit like Axe, finally passed uncut in 2005. This is a film by Herschell Gordon Lewis, known as the Godfather of Gore, more on him in another blog.
An Egyptian caretaker kills women, takes various body parts and tried to bring back an ancient Egyptian Goddess back to life.
There's buckets of vibrant red blood everywhere, lots of over the top gore but the only scene that seem to have upset the BBFC was of a girl being whipped.
This is an important movie, it is probably the first gore/splatter film, but important doesn't mean good, H.G. Lewis made quick, low budget movies, and this is one of them, it'll give you a laugh and should be watched, even if it's only out of curiosity!

Blood Rites (The Ghastly Ones) (1968) details on this movie are also a bit sketchy, it's on the banned/prosecuted list but no reasons given, not on the BBFC website or all the other usual sources. It appears still to be banned in the UK.
3 couples spend the night in an old Victorian era house to claim an inheritance, they start getting bumped of one by one.
There's nudity, gore, lots of gore but awful effects and possibly the clincher, a live rabbit is killed.
This movie is sickening, I'm not on about the gore I mean the acting and camera work, and come to think of it the effects, they're not special! I had to rewatch this as I couldn't remember it, then I did, now I need to try and forget it again! It was made by Andy Milligan who makes bad movies, not so bad they're good, just bad.

Bloody Moon (1981) passed with cuts for cinema but banned after being presented for classification for video, later passed uncut in 2008.
In this Jess Franco film girls are stalked and killed at a language school in Spain.
The kills in this movie are graphic and well done so it could have been any or all that attracted the attention of the censors but possibly the girl that is stabbed in the back and exits through her breast.
Jess Franco is better know for his sexploitation movies, to say he was prolific in the 1970/80's is an understatement and it tends to show in the quality of his films, but not this one, this is an effective thriller/slasher movie that will keep you guessing, worth a watch.

The Burning (1981) passed with cuts (no pun intended) for the cinema and finally released uncut in 2001.
A cash in on the success of Friday the 13th, a holiday camp caretaker who was badly burned in a prank returns to the camp to extract revenge in the most gruesome of ways..
Even though there was a requirement for cuts it looks like this movie was prosecuted after being illegally distributed uncut. The infamous raft massacre was initially cut (again no pun) as well as some of the other kills.
If you like Friday the 13th you'll like this, it's standard fare but well shoot, the effects are good, and the acting's not too bad, even if the characters are a bit cliched!
