Full movie available on Prime, oh how times have changed!
I Spit on your Grave (1978) never had a cinema release and solely released on video, or would have been had it not been prosecuted and banned, finally released with cuts once in 2001, 3 times in 2003 once again in 2005 and finally, well I say finally, in 2010.
A writer rents a secluded cabin to get away from it all to hopefully help her finish the book she's working on, some of the local boys decide to have some fun with her, in a brutal and graphic way, they leave her for dead, but she's not, and she's not going to let her ordeal go unpunished!
The 2001 release had 7 minutes of cuts from the 3 rape scenes, the 2003 releases had similar cuts to a lesser degree or were reframed to lessen effect of the rape scenes, the 2010 release was submitted as an uncut version but the BBFC cut nearly 3 minutes before it was allowed an 18 certificate.
Although not the first rape/revenge movie it is probably the most famous though, it is brutal and cruel, difficult to watch in places, the director Meir Zarchi, who also wrote it, tries to convey just how awful, humiliating and how utterly degrading rape is (I assume that it is probably a lot worse for the poor victim than it is possible for me or most people to imagine), the rape scenes are prolonged (in uncut versions especially) the revenge is deserved and equally brutal. It's worth a watch, slightly dated now but still significant, it took a while for people to change their minds about it and realise that it was supposed to be a pro-woman, it was originally called Day of the Women after all! There are some other good films similar to this that escaped the list for one reason or another, check out Ms. 45 and Thriller: A Cruel Picture (also called They Call Me One Eye, great title!)
Island of Death (1976) has, to say the least, a checkered release history, bear with me, it was released in 1976 under the title A Craving for Lust, with cuts, also in 1976 under the title Devils in Mykonos same cuts by the look of it! Submitted to the BBFC under the title of Psychic Killers 2 (it doesn't seem to have any connection to Psychic Killer 1 though!) and was rejected and banned. Resubmitted in 2002 with 4 minutes cut, and finally released virtually uncut in 2010!
An incestuous couple go on a rampage of rape, murder, sexual torture and bestiality on the holiday island of Mykonos, not sure why the BBFC had a problem with it!
The cuts mainly centered on the rape, the woman having her face burned off, the excessive kicking, scenes of sexualised violence but not surprisingly the goat scene!
I'm not sure what to say about this movie, I don't know if I love it or hate it, it's mad and rambling, cruel and twisted, it's either a work of genius or complete trash! You will have to make up your own minds on this one, good luck, it's a bit of a ride!
Last House on the Left (1972) was refused a cinema release, twice, once in 1974 and again in 2000, was given a video release in 2002 with 31 seconds of cuts, subsequent releases were reedited and cut until the 2018, original feature length was 84 minutes, video releases are around 82 minutes, reediting?
In this loose remake of Berman's Virgin Spring 2 young girls go to the city for a rock concert, they try and score some drugs and end up kidnapped by an escaped convict and his gang, things don't go well for the girls.
The cuts were to the scene where Krug carves his name into Mari's chest and the where Phyllis is made to urinate herself.
I've covered Last House in a previous blog, check it out.
Love Camp 7 (1969)has never been given a classification for either cinema or video release in the UK.
A couple of female agents agree to enter a nazi prison camp to gain infomation on scientists being held there, oh and it's also used as a brothel for nazi officers!
This "Based on a true story" film was the first of the naziploitation and the women in prison exploitation genres, is that a good thing or a bad thing, overall it's not a great movie and is more of a softcore porn movie.
Madhouse (1981) never received a cinema release but Medusa Home Video did release an uncut video in 1983, and that landed them in trouble, it was added to the list after that. In 2004 it was released uncut on video.
A woman is stalked by her evil twin leading up to their birthdays.
I had to do a quick rewatch on this one as it was that memorable (only watched it a few months ago!), it's gory, it's a bit confused and the effects aren't great.
