Red State (2011) is Smiths first horror movie, or at least that's how it's classed, I see it more of a thriller really.
Somewhere in middle America 3 lads are lured to a trailer with the promise of sex, they get more than they bargain for as they end up in the hands of fundamental Christians (emphasis on the mental bit!).
This film is critically acclaimed, and yes it is a good film, John Goodman and Michael Parks (a very under appreciated actor) are brilliant but in my opinion there seems to be something missing, I don't know what, it just a feeling.
I leave the film a little unsatisfied, the best way I think I can describe this is like when you go for one of those posh meals with little portions, every bit is delicious but you want just a little bit more, it has an 88 min runtime, perhaps it should have been more like 120 mins!
Tusk (2014) is the first part to Smiths 'True North Trilogy' and IS a horror movie, no doubt about that, a body horror movie, but as you'd expect there's a lot more to it.
An obnoxious, arrogant podcaster travels to Canada to interview a mysterious recluse who has a fantastic and disturbing story to tell!
This is a strange and wonderful film, I had a rough idea of the plot but that didn't prepare me for the whole story, which is horrific, funny and sad, not enough people know of this film.
It stars Michael Parks (again brilliant) and Justin Long (excellent) also a fat Haley Joel Osment (even though I thought he's left acting, but a pleasant surprise) all play their roles to perfection.
We also get to see out first look at Harley Quinn Smith and Lily-Rose Depp (guess their dads!), but more of them in the next film!
Yoga Hosers (2016) is the second part of the 'True North Trilogy' and centers around Harley Quinn Smith and Lily-Rose Depp reprising their characters from Tusk.
2 teenage yoga enthusiasts have to do battle with a mysterious underground menace that is threatening to ruin their party plans, yep, that tired old plot!
The first thing you need to get over is the fact that out 2 lead actresses can't really act that well, but bear with it, it's all worth it in the end and you'll soon forget that fact.
I don't really know how to explain this movie apart from the fact that it's bat shit crazy, starts off as quite a normal teen movie then.....wtf!
Smith as usual uses familiar faces as well as friends and family (some heavily made up!)
You definitely need to see this to believe it, again it's not a well know movie but should be, I can't wait for the third part of the trilogy, which is called Moose Jaws!
Jay and Silent Bob Reboot (2019) is the follow up to Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and to quote Kevin Smith it's "literally the same fucking movie all over again" but don't let that put you off, just embrace it!
Lots of old faces return, lots of cameos and lots of fun and profanity!
