I enjoyed the movie, more on the 2nd watching I must admit, but I don't think it's a great movie, just a good one, sorry if that offends anyone but that's my opinion!
The series on the other hand I thought was fantastic, it's one of the few series that I have watched on a weekly basis, I normally wait until I can binge the whole series, I think it may have even enhanced it a bit with the anticipation.
The series takes place 7 years after the big freeze, the film 10 years after that, there are differences between the two but the basic story is the same.
In case you haven't seen the movie, or don't know the plot here's a brief rundown:
To combat global warming scientists in their ultimate wisdom decide to seed the skies with a chemical that should counteract the damage done by man.
As we know the best laid plans and all that, yep it goes all wrong and the world starts to freeze, going into an artificial Ice Age.
Luckily one man had a plan, Mr Wilford built a train, Snowpiercer, it would travel around the world holding the last of the worlds civilization, it needs to stay in constant motion and if it stops for more than 13 minutes everybody would freeze to death.
Snowpiercer is 1001 carriages long and consists of 4 classes, 1st (the rich elite who live a life of luxury), 2nd (scientist, managers key workers), 3rd (cooks, waiting staff and what we'd now call essential staff) and tail (these are the ones that didn't have a ticket and forced their way onto the train)
The series stars the gorgeous and fantastic Jennifer Connelly, also Daveed Diggs who was a newcomer to me but is excellent in this.
There is a bit of a slowish start to the series but the build up in character development and tension is great as we open up with a gruesome murder.
This series expands on the film and answers a lot of questions that arose from it, it gives you a better understanding of the inner workings of the train and it's hierarchy.
I really got into it and the characters, there's a fine line between good and bad, and quite a bit of grey, which I like, it's one of the better series I've seen this year, and I've watched quite a lot!
The good news is as well that there's going to be a 2nd season, and it's going to have Sean Bean in it!
